Home Modifications Occupational Therapy Assessment

OT-685

Our Home Modifications Occupational Therapy assessments aim to ensure you or your loved one’s home is designed with specific needs in mind.

Home or environmental modifications can be performed to improve accessibility and liveability in your home.

Our Occupational Therapists are experienced in assessing and recommending minor and complex home modifications for clients living with a wide range of disabilities and medical conditions. We are registered with the NDIS for home modifications, assistive technology, and building works project management.

Minor or Non-Complex Home Modifications

The NDIS classifies minor home modifications as modifications that don’t change the structural parts of the home or cost no more than $20,000 to complete.

There are two categories:

  • Category A minor home modifications (cost under $10,000)

  • Category B minor home modifications (cost between $10,000 and $20,000, or involve minor modifications to a bathroom floor)

Recommendations for major home modifications may include:

  • Widening doorways

  • Installing grab rails, handrails and toilet bidets in bathrooms

  • Removing steps and installing handrails on stairs and paths

  • Changing tapware in bathrooms and kitchens

  • Installing a hand-held shower hose in the shower

  • Reinforcing ceilings for the installation of ceiling hoists

  • Installing sensor lights, fans or air conditioning

  • Installing automated doors or locks

Major or Complex Home Modifications

For major or complex home modifications, the NDIS requires an experienced Home Modifications Occupational Therapist to assess and recommend changes to the design of a space. These recommendations aim to facilitate increased independence and enhance quality of life.

On completion, an Occupational Therapist (OT) must certify the effectiveness of the modification and its suitability to meet a person's goals and future needs.

Recommendations for major home modifications may include:

  • Ramps to replace stairs for improved access

  • Home automation technology

  • Stair climbers, platform lifts or elevators

  • Ceiling hoist systems

  • Install accessible fixtures and fittings.

  • Kitchens modifications for functionality, including bench heights and cupboard configurations

  • Complete bathroom renovations to increase circulation spaces, remove recesses, and introduce step-less designs.

If your major home modification request is approved by the NDIS, the approval will usually provide recommendations and funding for a building works project manager (BWPM).

A BWPM can help with the design, scope of works, planning assessment and approvals, tender review and appointment of builders or other suppliers.
